ANTIPHONARIUM. Except for the Nordic feasts m the list of contents (f. 2') the manuscript matches Dominican use, Breviarium Dominicanum 1485 f. [ee 6]'"'.According to the list the original codex seems to have been produced in the 1370s or 1380s, but palaeographical features indicate a later date. F. 1 [Commune unius virginis extra tempus paschale| beginning [Do]mino of the 2nd resp. of the II nocturn, [Haee est virgo] I' Ista, and ending in the 2nd ant. at lauds. E 2 [Te Deum] beginning incessabili voce. fS'The leaf ends in a list of contents, which describes the first section of the destroyed manuscript. It is rubricated Hec Historie cont[...] in hoc Libra prima (sic). The sequence in the list is no doubt definite. containing the following observances: Resurrectionis Domini, Dominicarum usque ascensionem eiusdem, Ascensionis domini, Pentecostes, Sancte trinitatis, Corporis xpisti, Dominice prime trinitatis, Ceterarum dominicarum usque [ad festum] dedicacionis ecclesie, De dedicacionis (sic) ecclesie, Annunciacionis beate marie virginis, Vnius apostoli vel plurimorum, Ewangelistarum, Vnius martiris siue confessoris, Plurimorum martirum, Sancti petri, Sanctorum philippi et iacobi, Inuencionis sancte crucis, Corone Domini, Sancti ioannis ante portam latinam, Sancti erici, Sancti eskylli, Sancti iohannis baptiste, Sanctorum iohannis et pauli, Sanctorum apostolorum petri et pauli, Commemoracionis sancti pauli apostoli, Marie magdalene, Sancti iacobi apostoli, Sancti olaui regis et martiris, Sancte helene, Sancti petri vinculis, Inuencionis sancti stephani, Beati Dominici, Sancti laurencii, Sancti tyburcij, Assumpcionis beate marie virginis, Sancti augustini, Decollacionis iohannis baptiste, Natiuitatis beate marie virginis, Exaltacionis sancte crucis, Sancti michaelis archangeli, Omnium sanctorum, Commemoracionis omnium fidelium, Sancti martini, Sancte cecilie, Sancti dementis, Sancte katerine, Vnius apostoli uel plurimorum, Ewangelistarum.Vnius martiris, Plurimorum martirum,Vnius confessoris and Vnius virginis.
Naturally, the list is not to taken as a calendar. In any case one must observe that it ignores the Dedication of the Äbo cathedral (17th ofjune) and the Translation of St. Henry (18th ofjune). Further, it lacks the feasts of the Visitation (2nd of July), the Patrons of the Realm, St. Margaret (in Finland on the 13th of July), the Separation of the Apostles (15th ofJuly),and the feasts of St. Bridget. But St. Eskil is observed. On his ecclesiastical cult in Finland, see Taitto 1996 pp. 48 and 51-59, and Vilkuna 1977 p. 64. In the first mentioned article the present writer suggests that St. Eskil's rhymed office would not appear in the Ms. TMA Ttkad Gu 1:5 (the so-called Antiphonarium Laurenciusjacobi.ca. 1475-1485 ?)The office can be found on ff. 136-137',however.The error arises from a faulty description in Gummerus 1912 p. 99.
Vilkuna op.cit. mentions on p. 59 that the cult of Eskil "had not struck roots in Finland even at the beginning of the 15th century" (translation). Recent source studies by the present writer have revealed that the saint was, no doubt sporadically, venerated in the diocese of Abo since the latter part of the 14th century, possibly even from the middle of the century. Taitto 1996 p. 48.
