ANTIPHONARIUM. Conforms to Dominican use, Breviarium Dominicanum 1485 ff. [38]'- 42r, 44r, [i v]r - [i vj]". Items for the temporale and the sanctorale seem to have run in a joint sequence in the original manuscript. Feast days for the Immaculate Conception (8th of December) and St.Ann (9th of December, but in the diocese of Åbo 15th of December) are not observed. Concerning the latter, see the review accompanying the description of Antiphoner No. 33.
According to the current opinion the cult of the Immaculate Conception was adopted in the diocese of Abo along with the universal liturgical tendencies of the time, not under Franciscan influence. Malin 1925 pp. 236-237. In the archdiocese of Uppsala it seems to have become popular a little before the middle of the 14th century, and in Finland probably in the latter half of the century. See Malin ibidem. Helander 2001 pp. 105-106 reminds that Uppsala cathedral observed the feast before it was generally adopted elsewhere, in 1311.
The following manuscripts must be taken into account regarding the oldest evidence of the cult in secular Finnish tradition: a fragmentary calendar ofKalanti church (latter half of the 14th c,see Malin 1925 pp. 103-104 and 172), and Antiphoner No. 124 (supposedly Dominicanum-Aboense 14th or 15th c). See Antiphoner No. 82 as well (Dominican, uncertain provenance, 14th or 15th c),and Finlands medeltidsurkunder 11910 No. 498, in which the archbishop of Lund (Denmark) issues a statute (1345) for the whole ecclesiastical province regarding the celebration of the feast. -A will dated in Abo on the 9th of December (vacant) 1379 makes no reference to the feast, but this is because of the Roman type of computus, Rcgistrum ecclesiae Aboensis 1952 p. 612.
