ANTIPHONARIUM, Dominicanum-Aboense. See the remark accompanying the description of Antiphoner No. 145, relating to the office of the Visitation.
Milveden 1972 (a) p. 12 n. 34 dates this manuscript to the mid- 15th century. The fragment does not contain the feast for the Patrons of the Realm. For this reason the terminus ante quern falls in the mid-1470s. Maliniemi 1957 p. 29, Milveden 1963 p. 26, Helander 1989 pp. 1 12-128; Idem 2001 p. 378.
The unusual feast sequence can be explained by the fact that a supplementary section was added after the Te Deum (f. 6r).This section forms a secular type of addition to the basic Dominican structure of the original codex, or rather, to the original copying tradition. A similar arrangement is seen in the manuscript Stockholm, KB A 56 (provenance: Finland, ca. 1485-1500, described by Maliniemi 1957), not to mention many other additions to printed Dominican breviaries in Finland. The supplement is on ff. 6-25, and inchides Nordic rhymed offices.
A corpus Christi office, beginning with the ant. Sacerdos in aeternum and rubricated "Officium noue sollempnitatis corporis xpisti" calls our attention to the section. Because the manuscript represents a rather late date, the form of the rubric must derive from an older tradition. The earliest evidence of the feast in Finnish sources encountered so far is a document published in Finlands medeltidsurkunder I 1910, under No. 331. It is from 1326, but certainly the celebration was introduced by the 1310s, in consequence of the bull Transiturus in 1309.
Sacerdos in aeternum is very common in sources of Finnish provenance known to us. Besides Antiphoner No. 158 it has survived in No. 156 f. 1 (Dominicanum-Aboense ca. 1460-1475) and in No. 203 f.4 (Dominicanum- Aboense 16th c'"), as well in complete antiphoners likeTMATtkad Gu 1:3 ff. 68"-73r (Dominicanum-Aboense 15th c'""'),Vorå (Voyri Fi) Parish Records I a ff. 42"-48r (Dominicanum-Aboense 16th c'"), and HUL Ao II 29 ff. 66"-69" (Finnish 16th c"'"'). See also Antiphoner No. 74 f. 2, No. 100 f. 1 (14th or 15th c),No. 101 f. 2 (Dominican 14th or 15th c),No. 126 f. 3 (very probably Aboense 14th c" or 15th c), and No. 131 ff. 1-2 (Dominican 15th c) in our catalogue.
Sacerdos in aeternum is often found in Nordic printed breviaries as well, for instance in Breviarium Upsalense 1496 ff. [p iv]" - [p vij]r, Breviarium Arosiense 1513 ff. temporale 122"-125r, and Breviarium Scarense 1498 ff. CLXXVIir-CLXXXF. Breviarium Dominicanum 1485 gives it on ff. v 2'"[v 5]".
